How
SAFE Is PROLOTHERAPY?
Ross Hauser, M.D.
In his study published
in 1961, Abraham Myers, M.D., states that in treating 267 patients with
low back pain with and without
sciatica from May 1956 to October 1960 "over 4,500
Prolotherapy injections have been given without the occurrence of any
complication."
Prolotherapy is much safer than
taking aspirin day after day. Prolotherapy is also much safer for the body than
living with pain.
Pain not only decreases your
enjoyment of life, it creates stress in the body. Stress is the worst detriment
to good health. A body under stress triggers the "fight or flight"
response, which means the adrenal gland begins excreting
hormones such as
cortisol and adrenaline. The same thing occurs when a gun is pointed at you
during a robbery, but for a shorter period of time.
The adrenal gland, also known as
the stress gland, secretes cortisol to increase the amount of white blood cells
that are activated, as in cases of allergic or infectious stress. It puts the
body "on alert."
The adrenal gland also secretes
adrenaline, more properly named epinephrine, which is the hormone that
stimulates the
sympathetic
nervous system. When the sympathetic nervous system
is activated, blood vessels constrict and blood pressure rises-an unhealthy
situation long-term. This produces free radicals, causing oxidative damage to
the body. Long-term stress from
chronic pain results in long term oxidative
damage. This is one reason that people who suffer from chronic pain are ill more
frequently and age prematurely. This can also explain why they seem
"stressed out." Physiologically, they are! For chronic pain patients,
the only way to turn off the adrenaline system is to eliminate the pain. If the
chronic pain is due to
ligament or
tendon laxity, Prolotherapy is required.
Pain causes enormous stress on the
body which further enhances the need to rid the body of the pain. Prolotherapy
is recommended for every patient with structural chronic pain. Structural pain
from a loose joint,
cartilage, muscle, tendon, or
ligament weakness can be
eliminated with Prolotherapy.
Dr.
Hemwall, who treated more than
10,000 patients with more than four million injections, had not one episode of
paralysis, death, permanent nerve injury, or infection. In the words of Dr.
Hemwall, "not even a pimple" has formed at the site of the injections.
It is common however, to experience muscle stiffness after the
Prolotherapy injections for a
few days. This can be remedied with moist heat and natural protease enzymes such
as bromelains.
Prolotherapy is a very safe procedure if standard protocol and
solutions are used, but serious side effects are possible if these are not
followed.
Prolotherapy may not be
effective for every individual and there are risks involved, these risks
should be discussed with your physician.
Results achieved with some may not be typical
of all. Please consult a physician.
