Low
Back Pain Resolved With Prolotherapy
Even when taking
immunosuppressive drugs!
Ross Hauser,
M.D.
A 64 year old female, came to Caring Medical
because of constant incapacitating
low back pain she had been
experiencing. She reportedly sustained a back injury while on vacation
a couple of weeks prior to seeing us. She described the injury as her
back “snapping.” Her pain level prior to initiating treatment was a 10
out of 10. She was taking
narcotics for the pain, but she still was
unable to function in her daily activities. She wanted to be able to
care for and ride her horses, but she was unable to even bend over to
care for them, let alone ride them. Interestingly, this patient was also
taking immunosuppressive medications which were necessary because of a
stem cell transplant.
We generally encourage patients to stop medications
such as prednisone, since they are anti-inflammatories and
immunosuppressives and would be contraindicated with
Prolotherapy, since
the desired effect is inflammation and healing.
Due to the patient’s condition, she needed to stay on the Prednisone.
She did, however, stop taking the narcotics. After only three
treatments given at 4-week intervals, the patient reported a 75%
improvement. She was able to lie on her back to sleep again, and could
walk without pain. She no longer had constant severe pain, however, she
still noted some aching while sitting. Best of all, she was able to not
only care for her horses, but was also able to ride them!
