Mayo Clinic Performs Prolotherapy!
Robert Filice, M.D. Former staff physician

Many of the readers of Prolonews know by now that the Mayo Clinic Health Letter recently published a story that mentioned
Prolotherapy as a valid approach to chronic pain patients.

When he heard about this, Dr Hauser set upon a quest to find out the story behind the story. Read below the letter we received from the editor of the Mayo Clinic Health Letter:

June 6, 2005
Ross Hauser, MD

Dear Dr Hauser:

Thank you kindly for your letter regarding our article on prolotherapy. As medical editor of the Mayo Clinic Health Letter I seek the input of our board and suggestions to provide a broad perspective on availability of therapies that may be of benefit to our patient population.

There are individuals at Mayo Clinic that do
Prolotherapy both in our health system at Mayo Rochester and Mayo Jacksonville. I first learned of Prolotherapy through C. Everett Koop’s interest in the technique. This led me to further study to understand its potential value in treating patients with specific types of problems. Since chronic pain is such a substantial burden to our population I wanted to provide information on additional treatments that are gaining in prevalence and may be available to help them with these chronic conditions. That in a nutshell is the evolution of our article containing information on Prolotherapy.

With respect,
Robert D. Sheeler, MD
Medical Editor

Mayo Clinic Health letter

As you can see from this letter, there are physicians at the Mayo Clinic that are using Prolotherapy in treating their patients. We are grateful for the candor with which Dr Sheeler speaks, and his obvious sincere interest in getting helpful information to those that need it. So often in medicine valuable alternative treatment methods are squelched or ignored because they don’t fit into the existing paradigm. As committed natural medicine physicians Dr. Hauser and myself are constantly on the lookout for new and better ways of helping our patients, and strive to share what we find with you, our valued readers and patients. But one thing we already know first hand, and that is that Prolotherapy is an awesome treatment for chronic pain. Our hats are off to the Mayo clinic for making use of it for the benefit of their patients, and for recognizing and acknowledging publicly a good thing when they see it!

There is no known cure for arthritis. Prolotherapy and nutritional supplements can help alleviate, reverse, or end arthritic pain by treating an underlying cause that contributes to degenerative disease, ligament laxity. Strengthening ligaments and other connective tissue can help prevent bone on bone arthritis from developing.
