BOTOX®
Injections
Q.
I have persistent Myofascial Pain Syndrome and have suffered for a number
of years. The muscle spasms center in the shoulder and neck region. I have a
history of
herniated disc and
spinal fusion.
I received six BOTOX® injections into my neck to try to reduce the spasms. I
don't know if this is the correct treatment for me.
A.
Botox is a toxin from the clostridium botulinum, unless you have a clostridium
botulinum deficiency in your body I don't think BOTOX® is going to cure you of
your pain.
It decreases pain by decreasing muscle spasm by paralyzing the muscle.
In our opinion, a better approach is to find the cause of the muscle spasms. We
believe most chronic muscles are due to
ligament damage. The ligaments in the
neck or back become stretched or torn and loose the ability to hold the
vertebrae in place. The muscles then contract or go into spasm to hold the
vertebrae in a stable position. This eventually fatigues them and they contract
or get tight.
massage and BOTOX® and other types of therapies help relieve the muscle tightness
and pain temporarily but the pain comes right back because the underlying
ligament laxity is never addressed.
Prolotherapy is
our treatment of choice for
chronic ligament sprain or laxity.
Prolotherapy I believe would be a good option for you.
Prolotherapy stimulates the body to repair painful areas. The main benefit of
Prolotherapy versus BOTOX® is the effects are often permanent. In the long term
studies done over 25 years ago, the cure rate with Prolotherapy has been
anywhere from 75-82%. We are currently in the
process of putting our data together and it looks like similar results. |
