TAIL BONE PAIN
Q. I have experienced constant tailbone pain for almost six years.  There is a tender swollen area above the tailbone.  I suspect this stems from a fall on ice where my tailbone hit the corner of a concrete step.  The pain was unbelievable and I went to the emergency room.  X-rays did not reveal any damage.

This pain is very debilitating and I am almost to the point of not wanting to go on.  I have been to numerous doctors but cannot find anyone who can tell me why I'm hurting.

A. The tailbone, or coccyx attaches to the sacrum via the sacrococcygeal ligaments.  When ligaments are injured as they more likely were during your fall, the joint they support has excessive movement.  This excessive movement places additional strains on the injured ligaments.

The take home point is that whenever a joint is swollen from trauma, there is a high probability of
ligament injury.  Ligament injuries do not show up on x-ray. In my opinion, the treatment to repair injured ligaments is Prolotherapy.  Prolotherapy stimulates the body to repair the injured ligaments.

Prolotherapy involves
injections into and around the ligament and joint. The procedure in your particular case would be very quick and an anesthetic cream can be put on the skin to help take away any discomfort of the procedure. Typically this type of injury would require between 3-6 visits.

There is no known cure for arthritis. Prolotherapy and nutritional supplements can help alleviate, reverse, or end arthritic pain by treating an underlying cause that contributes to degenerative disease, ligament laxity. Strengthening ligaments and other connective tissue can help prevent bone on bone arthritis from developing.
