Q. Can
Prolotherapy
help TMJ
A. When
TMJ (temporomandibular
joint) pain is not helped with bite
adjustments it is reasonable to try
Prolotherapy.
Prolotherapy is helpful to
strengthen the ligament structures of the TMJ. For the majority of TMJ cases
that we see, the results are excellent. People generally experience relief of
their pain after three to six visits. They can get TMJ Prolotherapy while
undergoing bite adjustments but we normally see them after this. If the pain is
unbearable then, of course, we would see them while they are seeing their
dentist or orthodontist.

Happy With Prolo
I developed severe pain and clicking after biting into a
frozen peanut butter bar. I went to a oral surgeon, who told me had
arthritis in the TMJ joint. Also told me I needed to get a mouthguard
made up to wear at night. The cost was $750 dollars which was not
covered by my
insurance. I decided to try Prolotherapy, which cost about
$125. After one treatment my pain was relieved in about a week. It's
been 6 months now and still no pain! The treatment was about 5 minutes
and very little pain. If the pain comes back, I will do the treatment
again! |

Q.
Where Can TMJ pain occur?
I was wondering if pain from TMJ Syndrome, can occur on the side of your
face, just below forehead and beside the eye? This area is above the
TMJ Joint. I get bad
headaches, usually over one eye and I do have
neck pain. I was diagnosed with TMJ Syndrome 8 months ago, which now seems
to be doing better, except for this side of face pain the last month?
A. Yes it can but most likely your
pain is
referred from the back of your head or neck. You need to see
a
Prolotherapy doctor who should be able to tell you. If the pain is
worse in the a.m. then most likely you are clenching your teeth in
the night (bruxism). In that case, the pain is from the clenching
so you would need to wear a night splint. I find that a lot of the
problem is poor posture while sitting at the
computer. Make sure
your computer screen is a little above eye level so you aren't
having forward head posture while working on the computer.
If after the exam it isn't clear where the pain is coming from, I
would do
Neural Therapy
on temporaris muscle and then Prolotherapy to the TMJ and entire
neck. That way you are reassured all possible structures that could
be causing the pain have been treated.
